IRIS for Health Blockchain connector

To develop a Connector enabling the seamless export of health data from Intersystems IRIS for Health to a blockchain repository, empowering patients with control over their own health data. This solution ensures data integrity, transparency, and security while giving patients the ability to access, share, and manage their information directly.

The proposed Connector will serve as a bridge between Intersystems IRIS for Health and a blockchain repository (a decentralized ledger).

1. Data Export from Intersystems IRIS:

• The Connector will extract health data (e.g., medical records, lab results, or imaging files) stored in IRIS in a structured format.

• It ensures compliance with healthcare data standards like HL7 FHIR or DICOM, depending on the type of data.

2. Data Processing and Encryption:

• Before data is uploaded to the blockchain, it will be encrypted and transformed into a format suitable for decentralized storage.

• Sensitive information will be handled carefully to ensure it meets privacy regulations like GDPR or HIPAA.

3. Blockchain Integration:

• Data is then written to the blockchain repository. Blockchain ensures that data is immutable (unchangeable) and can be accessed transparently.

• Only authorized users, such as patients and their chosen healthcare providers, can access the data through private keys or smart contracts

4. Patient Control:

• Patients are given ownership of their data via the blockchain. They can decide who can view or access specific parts of their health information, enabling true data sovereignty. (EHDS)

• Patients can also revoke access if needed, offering dynamic and real-time control.

Why It’s Valuable:

• Patient Empowerment: Patients gain full control over their data, making healthcare more transparent and personalized.

• Data Security: Blockchain adds an extra layer of security with encryption and decentralization, reducing risks of breaches.

• Interoperability: The Connector can standardize data, enabling smooth sharing between disparate healthcare systems.

• Transparency and Trust: Patients and healthcare providers can verify data authenticity, fostering trust in digital health systems.

It would be wonderful if a smart contract were implemented
